Thermo-mechanical forging of 708M40 steel ring samples: experiments and modelling

Abstract A series of ring compression tests using BS970:708M40 alloy steel samples were studied. These conducted a 2-factor soak-temperature variable, namely 1030 °C and 1300 °C, 4-factor lubricant variable consisting unlubricated samples, synthetic water-based, graphite molybdenum disulphide viscous grease. The agents all applied to the tool/billet interface. Process variables such as blow force heating controlled with use gravitationally operated drop hammer an automated programmable induction-heating unit. This matrix experimental parameters offered sound base for exploring dominant factors impacting upon bulk deformation. deformation was measured fully calibrated equipment then systematically recorded. finite element modelling framework developed further improve thermo-mechanical process understanding, (FE) predictions validated through measurement. Through combined FE work, it shown that temperature variation in parameter played larger role determining than lubrication agent. Additionally, water-based lubricants does not necessarily produce greater when used high-temperature forgings due breaking down, evaporating, or inducing rapid billet cooling result carrier (water). Graphite-molybdenum disulphate grease far outperforms other this trial reducing friction allowing occur across die-face.
